The History of Flamborough

The area of Flamborough was first inhabited by The Chonnonton Nation. Over the years, several other First Nations settled in the area before the first European settlers arrived. In the 1600s, the area of Flamborough was settled by French explorers before falling to the English in the 1700s and becoming part of Upper Canada after the American Revolution. 

Between 1812 and the early 1900s, the area was inhabited by many Indigenous refugees. However, as the century progressed, these Nations were forced to sell their land, resulting in a large population of pioneering farming families in the area. 

In 2001, Flamborough was amalgamated into the Greater City of Hamilton, which is how it remains today.

Flamborough is situated on the Niagara Peninsula in the northwest corner of Hamilton. The community is almost directly between Hamilton and Burlington, making it popular with commuters and families alike.

With the pine and oak forests cleared by settlers, Flamborough became an influential farming community. Although the community is primarily rural, there are numerous ways Flamborough residents can access public transit. For example, the Aldershot GO Station provides access to bus routes with stops in Hamilton and Waterdown as well as VIA Rail train routes. The area is also well-served by local highways including Highway 5, 6, and 8 as well as easy access to the 403.

As a rural community with a large geographic area, Flamborough residents have access to numerous smaller doctor’s offices, clinics, and healthcare facilities. Some of the specialized healthcare available include hearing centres, physiotherapy, extended care facilities, eye care centres, and more. For emergencies, most Flamborough residents would use the Hamilton General Hospital or other facilities in West Hamilton.

Arts and Culture in Flamborough

With an expansive area and extensive rural properties, there’s still a lot to see and do in Flamborough.

For a night out, Flamborough residents have a nice selection of restaurants to choose from. Season’s at Cedars and The Cookhouse Bistro are popular choices. The Pavillion at Flamboro Downs also provides access to a buffet, horse racing, and casino for a full night of activities. Residents are also close to the many charming eateries in Waterdown as well as some classic chain staples like The Keg.

Flamborough residents have access to essential shopping including grocery stores, pharmacies, home improvement stores, and more. For specialized needs, gifts, and other niche products, most residents will head to Waterdown to take advantage of the local shops and boutiques and the charming Waterdown Farmer’s Market. There is also the Flamborough South Centre with a Wal-Mart, Staples, Sleep Country, and more.

Located on the Niagara Peninsula, Flamborough is intersected by the Bruce Trai, the Spencer Gorge and Webster’s Falls Conservation Area. Popular hikes to Webster’s Falls and Tew’s Falls are a must-see in Flamborough. Christie Lake and Valens Conservation area are also nearby, offering camping, fishing, boating, and swimming.
